Growing your own sprouts at home is super easy! It is way more cost effective than buying them at the supermarket, and allows you to grow whatever kind of sprout or seed mix you wish!
I first learned how to grow my own sprouts at home when I lived in Burlington, VT. I had access to a food co-op there that had all kinds of local sprouting seed mixtures! Unfortunately, where I currently live that is not the case, so I order my mixtures off of Amazon. I really like using Alfalfa Sprouts because I never have any trouble with them.
They sell "sprouting blends" that are pretty nice too. I like sandwich seed blends. Pick whatever your feeling. I will warn you - I have never had luck with broccoli sprouts... they always mold on me, so I have given up.
What to use them for: Sprouts add a nice crunch to whatever you add them to! Try them on salads, sandwiches, toast, wraps, inside buddha bowls, atop any dish for a little decoration... pretty much on whatever fits your fancy!
What You Will Need To Grow Your Own Sprouts:
- Mason Jar (or jar with a matching lid)
- Sprouting lid: many options here, I personally use these lids off of amazon.
- You can make your own using plastic/fine mesh wire, cut to the size of a mouth of a mason jar. Personally, I find the metal ring lid that comes with the jar gets rusty over time, so I use all plastic ones, but you do you.
- Sprouting seeds of choice
- Large bowl/tupperware container that fits jar(s). You'll need them to be able to be placed upside down at an angle to allow water to flow out of the jar. See photos below!
How To Grow Your Own Sprouts
It's pretty simple really. You will soak you seeds overnight, then drain and rinse the seeds. Next, you'll place them upsid
- Get a jar, put 1-2 tablespoons of sprouting seeds in the bottom and fill it with water. Let it soak overnight.
- Put sprouting lid on top of jar, and tilt the jar upside down to drain all the water out.
- Then remove the lid, fill the jar back up with water, and put the lid back on. Swirl the jar to rinse the seeds, tilt it upside down to drain all the water out.
- Set the jar upside down at an angle inside a larger bowl. Leave it there to drain the rest of the water until the following day.
- Now, you will repeat the "rinse and drain" method : remove the lid, fill the jar with water, put the lid back on, swirl the jar to rinse the seeds, and tilt it upside down, draining all the water out.
- Repeat this for 5-7 days, until most all of your seeds have turned into sprouts! Length of time will depend on a few factors but count on at least 5 days.
- Remove the seeds from the jar and place them in an airtight container in the fridge - they'll last for a week!
