Apple & Pear Fruit Crumble

Apple & pear fruit crumble is an amazingly easy and shareable fall dessert! Better yet - you can use whatever fruit you'd like!

Ingredients

Units Scale

Fruit Mixture:

  • 4 medium apples (I used gala) - sliced
  • 4 pears - cubed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2-3 tbsp butter
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt

Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 stick butter - room temperature
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Slice apples and chop pears into small chunks (the variation in cuts gives nice texture).
  2. In a bowl, toss cut fruit with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon.
  3. Rub a baking dish or dutch oven with some butter. If cooking over a fire, add a few small slices of butter to the bottom of the pan to prevent stickage.
  4. Pour fruit mixture into bottom of baking dish
  5. Assemble the crumble topping: mix flour, oats,  brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
  6. Cut remaining butter into tablespoon sized pieces and add to the bowl.
  7. Using a fork, pastry cutter (or your hands) cream butter into sugar until large crumbs form.
  8. Scatter the crumble evenly over the fruit mixture.
  9. Bake, covered (if using a dutch oven) for 35-45 minutes, until mixture is bubbling around the edges.
  10. Let the crumble cool at least 15 minutes before serving. This helps the fruit set.
  11. Serve alone or alongside ice cream - Enjoy!

Notes

This recipe can be made in the oven or over a fire! The bubbling all around the edges will determine when it is ready.

See blog post for instructions on how to swap out different fruits.
