This apple & pear fruit crumble uses end of the season produce for an amazingly easy and shareable fall dessert! Better yet - you can customize the fruit used based on what you like/have on hand!
We've got another camping recipe for you! This time a lovely dessert recipe developed using Wolf & Grizzly's cook system and dutch oven. We wanted to show you that you do not need an oven to make your favorite deserts! Instead, many can be cooked inside a cast iron dutch oven over an open flame, in a beautiful place!
Obviously, if you are not out camping, you can make this at home in the oven! Plus, my dad helped me with this one. He is big reason why I love cooking so much today. We love a good father-daughter moment. I'm glad he got to watch some of what goes on behind the scenes of this food blog (thanks for helping me, Dad!)
Apple & Pear Fruit Crumble Ingredients
- Butter - room temp is easier to turn into the crumble
- Apples - any will do! I used gala
- Pears - any will do
- Sugar (Brown & Granulated): Brown for the topping, granulated for the filling
- Lemons - fresh or lemon juice!
- Flour
- Oats
- Cinnamon
- Corn Starch - helps absorb the juices of the fruit while cooking and bind ingredients.
- Baking Powder
- Kosher Salt
How To Make Apple & Pear Fruit Crumble
- Slice apples and chop pears into small chunks (the variation in cuts gives nice texture)
- In a bowl, toss fruit with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon.
- Line a baking dish or dutch oven with a few slices of butter
- Pour fruit mixture into bottom of baking dish
- For the crumble topping: combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
- Cut remaining butter into tablespoon sized pieces and add to the bowl.
- Using a fork, pastry cutter (or your hands) cream butter into sugar until large crumbs form.
- Scatter the crumble evenly over the fruit mixture.
- Bake, covered (if using a dutch oven) for 30-35 minutes, until mixture is bubbling around the edges.
- Let the crumble cool at least 15 minutes before serving. This helps the fruit set.
- Serve alone or alongside ice cream - Enjoy!
Home Cook Hacks/ Substitutions
- The beauty of crumble is you can use pretty much any fruit you've got lying around. You can even use frozen (or canned) fruit. Your aiming for 6-7 cups of fruit.
- If camping, you can pre-measure the dry ingredients at home. Get two containers, measure everything needed for the crumble in one, and everything needed for the topping in another. (adjust corn starch for the crumble as needed based on fruits being used).

Notes
This recipe can be made in the oven or over a fire! The bubbling all around the edges will determine when it is ready.
