This Maca Turmeric Strawberry Banana smoothie is for all my strawberry banana lovers out there. It has several superfoods added into it, making it a nutrient powerhouse smoothie.

    Maca Turmeric Strawberry Banana Smoothie

    A classic with a twist...

This maca turmeric strawberry banana smoothie has a beautiful color, name, and nutrient profile. It has maca powder, turmeric, and flax seeds added into it. These three superfoods (otherwise known as functional foods) turn this average smoothie into a nutrient rich, adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory drink.

    Let's Talk SuperFoods

Maca is an adaptogenic root vegetable typically found in powdered form that can be found at most health food stores. It has several benefits including hormone balance, stress/anxiety reduction, and endurance/energy properties.

Turmeric is another root that is found in powdered or fresh form. It is known for its anti-inflammatory compounds, called curcuminoids. I love to add this to smoothies and curries, and it is a commonly used spice in Indian food as well.

Flaxseed is a seed high in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, ligans. They have anti-inflammatory compounds, and are a great and healthy way to boost digestion. Due to their seed nature, these are best used ground and fresh. Grinding seeds helps your body to digest their wonderful components more efficiently. Do note - ground flaxseed can go rancid if not stored in a cool environment after it is ground. I like to grind a cup or two and store it in an airtight glass jar in the freezer - where it is ready on hand for smoothie!

I am always looking for ways to incorporate superfoods into my diet, and smoothies are by far the easiest way. The benefits from the maca, turmeric, and chia seeds really offer this smoothie some next level nutrition! Better yet, consider adding in a large carrot or two. They blend in fabulously and provide a great source of vitamin A. In fact, I typically throw a carrot into most of my smoothies. A super seamless way to get those vitamins in everyday!

    A note:

***It should be noted that with many superfoods, some of these properties listed above are not yet widely supported by scientific literature and/or governing bodies. Whether you want to get on the superfood train or not, the micronutrient content of these foods alone reserve a superfood spot for them in my kitchen. I am a huge proponent of holistic health, and these ingredients fall into that category for me. I have an entire superfood section of my pantry. As always, do your research and let that guide what you decide to keep stocked in your pantry.

    • Prep Time: 5 minutes
    • Total Time: 5 minutes
    • Yield: 2 smoothies 1x

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 2-3 ripe bananas (I like frozen bananas)
    • 1 ½ cup frozen strawberries (fresh are fine too)
    • 1 tsp maca powder
    • 1 cup milk (I like almond)
    • 1 cup water
    • 2-3 tbsp flaxseed (ground)
    • 1 inch ginger
    • 1 handful ice (if not using frozen bananas)
    • 1 ½ inch turmeric root (or 1 tsp powder)

    Optional Add In's

    • 1 med carrot
    • protein powder of choice
    • collagen powder

    Instructions

    1. Add everything to a high speed blender and blend for about a minute, or until smooth.
    2. Serve right away, or make ahead for the following day. Flaxseed will thicken overnight and you'll need to add a little water to the smoothie to thin it out.

    Notes

Lasts in fridge a few days.
